5 October 2012 - Aurecon’s Steve Negus, Industry Leader for Data and Telecommunications, and Angus Leitch, Buildings Unit Manager in Perth, are attending today’s Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) official opening ceremony hosted by CSIRO.
The event celebrates the construction of the ASKAP radio telescope, and the establishment of the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) on which ASKAP is sited. “This significant event marks the formal opening of the telescope and its ability to start scientific observations,” said CSIRO ASKAP Director Antony Schinckel.
Steve Negus commented that Aurecon is proud to have contributed to the development of ASKAP, set to be one of the world’s premier radio telescopes that will help to answer fundamental questions about our universe.
“ASKAP, when fully commissioned, will enable large areas of sky to be surveyed with unprecedented sensitivity and speed,” added Schinckel.
Guests at the ceremony include ministerial representatives, ambassadors, SKA organisation board members, government and industry representatives and local stakeholders.
About the ASKAP project
Aurecon was awarded the role of infrastructure designer and construction contract superintendent for part of the AUD 160 million project, in collaboration with various government stakeholders. In addition to civil, structural, electrical design and contract superintendence services, Aurecon has also been involved with GIS related services.
Aurecon’s methodology was to ensure an ongoing collaborative approach so that all of the relevant stakeholders were informed and involved in the decision making process. We achieved this by hosting prescribed and supplementary workshops with the relevant stakeholders to progress the project and work through issues as they arose.
The project involves constructing a radio telescope array of 36 dish antennas, each 12 metres in diameter, a control building and supporting infrastructure on the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) site by 2013.
