The project is a joint partnership between the Leighton-Abigroup Joint Venture, the Queensland Government and Queensland Motorways.
Aurecon’s role involved the review of the design packages prepared by the Leighton Abigroup JV for the 12 km of widening of existing dual carriageway, and 7 km of a new six-lane carriageway across derelict and swampy ?ood-plains.
Ken Gillard Transport Leader, Queensland said: “Aurecon has been involved in the Gateway Upgrade Project since 2003 preparing the EIS, undertaking reference design and doing design reviews to ensure compliance with the brief. Aurecon has also been involved in a variety of roles in all stages of project delivery having been responsible for the total design and project management for the original Gateway Bridge and the full section of motorway between Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Road and Lytton Road.”
This project has already eased congestion across Brisbane and the project was commended by the IPA for its collaborative approach between the public and private sectors.
IPA Chairman Mark Birrell said: “Because the private sector and Queensland Government took a flexible, outcome based approach, there was able to be a significant alteration to the project to deliver four kilometres of new motorway as part of its construction.”
Ken agreed and said that the culture of collaboration was key and meant that issues were addressed and solved with minimum fuss.
The Gateway Bridge will significantly contribute to the easing of freight efficiency across Brisbane and the project was delivered seven months ahead of schedule. It is expected to boost Gross Domestic Product by million per year.
