06 July 2011 - Aurecon is providing programme and project management services to Queensland Health on one of the largest public health projects in Australia.

Once complete, the Queensland Children’s Hospital (QCH) will be the leading specialist paediatric and adolescent health care facility in Queensland, acting as the central hub for a statewide network of children’s health services. The program includes an Academic and Research Facility (ARF) that will support research into paediatric healthcare.

Located adjacent to the Mater Hospital campus in South Brisbane, the QCH and A&RF are being delivered through Queensland Health’s Health Planning and Infrastructure Division.

“Aurecon has an outstanding team of eight project management staff located within the project office, which is shared with Queensland Health project staff, while other members of our team work from within our Brisbane and Melbourne offices” Aurecon’s project leader Matt Skeen said.

“We have been working closely with our client, external authorities and the project team since mid 2007 and remain on track for a 2014 opening.”

In late May 2011, a significant project milestone was achieved with the final cement pour of the hospital’s first floor laid. The conclusion of this phase of the project was marked with a ceremony attended by the Hon. Geoff Wilson, Minister for Health and members of the project team.

At the event, Mr Wilson said: “This is a major milestone in this great project – one of the largest public health projects in Australia. The Queensland Children’s Hospital will ensure our most seriously ill children are cared for by world-leading paediatric specialist staff.”

The new hospital design comprises 359 public beds, 12 levels and more than 70 000 square metres of clinical floor space.

The new children’s hospital will bring together the existing specialist paediatric services of three of Queensland’s leading children’s facilities – the Royal Children’s Hospital, the Mater Children’s Hospital and the Queensland Paediatric Cardiac Service at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH).

“In addition to project management services, Aurecon has also provided a range of advisory services, including preparation for the project’s business case, provision of facilities management advice and the fulfilment of the program director role for Queensland Health” Mr Skeen said.
