New transit link for Hong Kong’s MTR Rapid Transit Network

Shatin to Central Link Contract 1103 is a strategic railway line currently under construction, which is part of the major expansion of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation’s (MTRC) rapid transit network in Hong Kong.

As the Independent Checking Engineer for a majority of the temporary and some of the permanent works, Aurecon’s scope includes:

  • Checking of the temporary works designs, including tunnel temporary supports and formworks
  • Site inspections of the contractor’s temporary works
  • Checking of the contractor’s permanent works designs including tunnel permanent supports
  • Checking of the contractor’s alternative designs

The challenges

Aurecon was presented with tight target dates to complete the majority of the Independent Checking Engineer tasks. Efficient time management and close collaboration between the contractor on site and Aurecon’s full-time site representatives were key to delivering packages within the required timeframes.  

Aurecon maintained the high quality of service and the required number of full-time personnel on site during the lifespan of the project by rotating employees with different levels of expertise.

Site safety was a top priority and Aurecon contributed to creating and maintaining a safe work environment for all works with regular safety walks and safety conversations.

The community benefit of Shatin to Central Link

The project will serve the New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. Completion of the Shatin to Central Link will be in two stages: the Tai Wai-Hung Hom section is expected to be finished in the middle of 2019, with the cross-harbour section to Admiralty scheduled for completion in 2021.
