Since its 2010 opening, Marina Bay Sands has become one of the world's most recognisable structures, located in the heart of Singapore's Marina Bay downtown district. It integrates a prestigious waterfront promenade with iconic retail, MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions & exhibitions) space, entertainment and hotel facilities, public spaces, ArtScience Museum and breath-taking city views.
A US$1 billion reinvestment programme has been underway since 2021 – the biggest since the integrated resort’s opening – encompassing extensive upgrading of all rooms and suites in Towers 1 and 2 of the Hotel to significantly elevate the hospitality experience in the luxury travel segment.
Aurecon was appointed to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing and extra low voltage engineering, together with fire protection and in-room technology design.

Designing mechanical and electrical services for refurbishment of this existing and operating hotel presents challenges and opportunities.
Slimline air conditioning units enable the ceiling height of rooms to increase by up to 200 mm, creating more spacious interiors for hotel guests.
The new multi-functional bathroom sanitary ware and fittings have been integrated with existing services infrastructure with minimal impact. Environmentally Sustainability is high on the project objective. All new mechanical and electrical equipment such as air conditioning units, and sanitary ware were carefully selected to meet high standards for energy and water efficiency.
New in-room technology in each hotel room and suite allows guests seamless integration of thermal comfort, lighting, the entertainment system, and blinds.
To reduce energy usage, the in-room technology is connected to the hotel’s operations network. In this way, the operations network can automatically reduce the air-conditioning rating at times between hotel room occupancy. In addition, maximum air-conditioning settings can be optimised and adjusted centrally to account for fluctuations in Singapore’s outdoor temperature.
The extensive refurbishment exercise had to be conducted while business is still fully operational. Therefore, a staging approach was adopted. To ensure design and construction coordination, Building Information Modelling (BIM) was embraced.
Aurecon worked closely with the architects, contractors, and Marina Bay Sands so that refurbishments were undertaken progressively across multiple floors, to ensure works were carried out with minimal disruption to services and hotel guests.
