Aurecon has been appointed as the Owner’s Engineer for New Zealand’s largest solar project at Te Aroha in the Waikato, New Zealand, a project brought online by a joint venture between Harmony Energy Limited and Clarus company, First Renewables.

“New Zealand’s solar watts are coming online at a blistering pace,” says Blair Walter, Principal, Power Generation at Aurecon. “We’re seeing a number of new players enter the market, and this is one of four consented projects for Harmony Energy. At the moment there is over 370MW of new solar under construction or nearing completion, with much more in the pipeline.”

One of the project’s now commencing construction is Tauhei Solar Farm, which will be New Zealand’s largest solar project at 202 MWp at the time of construction. This milestone follows the successful financial close and final investment approval by joint venture partners, Harmony Energy and First Renewables.

"The project demonstrates how government, industry, and financial institutions can work together to meet New Zealand’s energy security and climate goals."

The Tauhei solar farm, which is expected to be commissioned by late 2026, will cover 182 hectares and generate 280 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough renewable electricity to supply the equivalent of approximately 35,000 New Zealand homes and businesses.

Harmony Energy Managing Director Garth Elmes said, “The Tauhei solar farm is supported by a power purchase arrangement with Meridian Energy, who will purchase 100 per cent of the output for the first 10 years of operation. The project demonstrates how government, industry, and financial institutions can work together to meet New Zealand’s energy security and climate goals.”

Clarus GM Future Fuels, James Irvine said, “The Tauhei solar farm sets a benchmark for large-scale solar projects, reinforcing the growing role of solar in New Zealand’s renewable energy landscape.”

It will also generate jobs and business opportunities and support biodiversity in the area by creating a wetland and allowing the land to continue to be used for farming.

Aurecon’s renewable energy specialists Blair Walter, Guatam Dewan and Tim Stringfield brought their expertise in technical due diligence to this project, providing the critical techno-commercial assessments required to thoroughly assess the project before it progressed to construction. Aurecon is continuing to support the project through the design, construction and commissioning of the solar farm in its capacity as Owner’s Engineer and Financier’s Certifier.
