For Lucy, an internship at Aurecon was an opportunity to apply her university knowledge and gain hands-on experience in a company that aligned with her values.
Drawn in by Aurecon's website, award winning projects, and employee initiatives like the Limelight Network, Lucy knew it was the ideal place to grow her career.
During her internship, she embraced Aurecon's "playful with serious intent" attitude, jumping into diverse tasks like designing HVAC systems for the Forestry Centre of Excellence and attending site inspections, all while benefiting from daily collaboration and fun fuelled culture during Aurecon's training sessions.
I researched lots of different engineering firms and was really drawn to Aurecon. Their website felt welcoming, and I liked the impressive range of innovative and sustainable building projects they’re involved in. The Limelight Network stood out to me as a fantastic way to meet other early-career professionals.
I also gave a listen to the Engineering Reimagined podcast, particularly episode 15 of season 2 called, 'Some Excellent Reasons for Women to Become Engineers.' It talked about how women engineers are creating social change and finding unique career paths in an industry where they’re often in the minority. This really motivated me and I knew that Aurecon was the right place for me to grow and develop my career.
"I found it exciting to know that I was contributing to a design that would eventually turn into a building that people would use."
Most mornings started with coffee and a quick bus ride to the office. We have hot desks, but our Adelaide team sits together, which made it feel close-knit. After checking emails, I’d join morning technical sessions with the mechanical buildings team in Melbourne.
My tasks included marking up drawings, doing calculations, designing HVAC layouts and sometimes joining site inspections. Lunch with other interns was always a highlight, and after work I’d head to footy training or the beach.

The Forestry Centre of Excellence was particularly exciting because it was the first project where I helped design a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system for the new facility. I loved being able to apply the technical knowledge I gained at university while also drawing on the expertise of a senior engineer I was working with. It was a fantastic blend of creativity and problem-solving as I figured out how to make the design work effectively.
This project also gave me a real insight into how different disciplines collaborate to bring a project to life. I attended meetings with architects and other service engineers, and I found it exciting to know that I was contributing to a design that would eventually turn into a building that people would use for years to come.
Another memorable highlight of my internship was tagging along on a site inspection with the Group Executive Leadership Team (GELT) to the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre construction site. This unique opportunity allowed me to spend time with the GELT team and ask them questions, which was incredibly valuable. Moments like these really solidified my passion for the field and left me feeling inspired about my future in engineering.

During my internship, I was assigned two buddies, who were incredibly supportive and played a key role in my development. They were always available to answer any questions I had, whether they were technical or simply related to office life.
Aurecon also offered a fantastic training series for interns, including introductions to other services, digital documentation sessions, lunch and learns, and various general skill-building workshops. These sessions provided me with valuable skills that were essential for successfully completing the projects I worked on.
Collaborative, fun and innovative. Everyone genuinely works together to get things done, not just within our own teams, but across different disciplines too, especially when we’re pushing to meet project deadlines. It’s also a fun place to be, there’s always time for a coffee catch-up or a lunch walk, and those little moments really make a difference. And its definitely innovative, leadership is always encouraging us to think differently and come up with new ways to improve how we work and how we deliver to our clients.

After my internship with Aurecon, I was thrilled to receive an offer for a graduate role once I complete my university degree. In the meantime, I'm working casually, which allows me to continue learning and experiencing different teams and disciplines before starting full-time work.
Staying integrated with the team while I finish my studies will make my transition to a full-time position much smoother. It’s also inspiring knowing many of Aurecon’s leaders started their careers as graduates!
