Tracey Ryan, Aurecon’s Managing Director, New Zealand will travel to Japan in the week of 16 to 20 June as part of the Prime Minister’s delegation, focussed on strengthening Aotearoa New Zealand’s engagement and relationships in the region.
Japan is Aotearoa New Zealand’s fourth-largest trading partner, and links between the two countries date back over 100 years, with substantive trade, political, economic and tourism ties.

Ryan is travelling to Japan in her capacity as Managing Director of Aurecon, as well as Co-Chair of BusinessNZ Major Companies Group’s CEO Advisory Group, Chair of the Infrastructure New Zealand Board and Chair of International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Sustainable Development Committee.
She is particularly looking forward to learning about Japan’s approach to resilient infrastructure development and renewable energy, including, more broadly, the transition to net zero.
“Japan is making positive steps towards creating greater diversity in their energy mix and accelerating the transition to a decarbonised energy system, and Aotearoa New Zealand’s renewable energy credentials position us well to share knowledge and innovation as they make progress in this area. We’re also seeing Japanese companies with interests in investing in New Zealand in the renewables space, and supporting our own journey to net zero.”
“There is much we can learn and share about how to create more resilient infrastructure and societies."

Infrastructure resilience is also an obvious area for collaboration, Ryan explains.
“As island nations who are both part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan and New Zealand have much in common in terms of their vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters. There is much we can learn and share about how to create more resilient infrastructure and societies, including from Aurecon’s experiences as part of the Transport Recovery East Coast, Kaikōura Earthquake Recovery, and of course, Christchurch.”
This delegation is as much about sharing knowledge and insight as it is about learning, and Ryan’s relationships in the global infrastructure community through FIDIC and her earlier career working throughout Europe, can provide connections and knowledge that may assist Japan in their infrastructure development planning.
