Aurecon secures key contract for Gabbro terminal expansion

24 January 2014 - Aurecon has secured a key project management services contract for Qatar Primary Materials Co (QPMC).

QPMC was established on the instruction of the Qatari Government in 2006 to be the leading provider of primary materials to support the continuing development of the State of Qatar.

The Aurecon Project Manager, Glenn Hallahan, said the project management services contract for the Gabbro Terminal Expansion Project, based in Mesaieed, was secured through Aurecon’s sound understanding of QPMC’s project, operational and commercial needs, a flexible and responsive approach and a willingness to work hand-in-hand with the client.

“This award, based on a relationship started by Michael Vincent, confirms the relevance of our experience in the delivery of major seaboard bulk material handling projects combined with a local presence in Qatar and the value of our business model, which focuses on establishing our clients’ definition of success and tailoring the best Aurecon team across sectors, expertise and geographies to engineer that success,” Glenn commented.

QPMC currently operates three Gabbro berths and one barge unloading facility at Umm Said Port.

To support the growing demand of aggregate cargo for Qatar’s infrastructure development, QPMC is planning to increase the capacity of the bulk materials import terminal to thirty million tonnes per annum.

This will be achieved by installing a new four stream conveyor system to transport bulk aggregate materials from the existing shore cranes (grab type ship unloaders) at berths 2 and 3 to stackers at the QPMC stockyard. Truck discharge hoppers will be also installed in the corridor area to receive material from Berth 1 and the barge facility.

The project will be delivered through an EPC Contract by a consortium comprising FLSmidth and Six Construct. Aurecon will fulfil the role of Owner’s Project Manager and Engineer for the 29 month project.
