5 December 2013 - Dr John Connell, a founder of Aurecon and one of the most influential engineers of his generation, recently celebrated his 100th birthday.

Engineers Australia held a function to mark the occasion on Wednesday 23 October 2013, which was attended by a number of John’s former colleagues and clients.

President of Engineers Australia’s Victoria Division, John McIntosh, gave a speech at the event and said, “The man we honour today is a leader who held an extraordinary vision into the future and the very rare capacity to bring that future to pass.”

He went on to thank John for his many years of service to Engineers Australia and to the Engineering profession. In addressing John directly he said “Your leadership is unrivalled and your legacy, a challenge for those of us who would walk in your footsteps.”

Aurecon also hosted an event at our Melbourne office on 27 November to celebrate John’s birthday with some of his long standing colleagues, including current members of Aurecon’s leadership team and previous CEOs Jack Wynhoven and Bob Squire.

CEO Paul Hardy recently interviewed John on his career highlights and the changes that have occurred in the profession over this time.

In the interview, John talked about his involvement on projects like the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop where he pioneered the delivery of multidisciplinary services and partnering with international consultancies in joint venture.

“John took a world view at a time when many consulting practices were focussing on local issues and locally based solutions,” Paul said.

John’s involvement in helping to shape the cities and infrastructure of Australia in the post second world war period has left a legacy that endures today. His vision for innovative engineering and passion for realising ideas remains at the heart of operations at Aurecon.
