Aurecon provides the glass wall and support system concept design for the facade of the Suvarnabhumi Airport.
As you look down the length of Suvarnabhumi Airport you see results that are in tune with Thailand’s culture, a building that’s surprising and breathtaking. This airport is busy, with more than 48 million passengers travelling through each year.
To create the façade of a building at the cutting edge of state-of-the-art technology required a very strict and close cooperation between all disciplines. Aurecon worked in harmony with Kama JV, the façade specialist, and Airports of Thailand to design the glass wall and support system concept for the building façade.
At 37 metres high and over 1.1 kilometres in length, the façade system was one of the largest tension truss point fixed glass systems in the world at the time.
The structure relied on previously establishing tension in a highly compacted 14 mm-diameter stainless steel cable supported by compression spreader strut elements between two vertical trusses to provide a horizontal truss system.
