The Kaikoura Earthquake Recovery project was more than just a rail and road, repair and reopening. Families and friends were reconnected, businesses welcomed tourists back, and freight could move easily to and across the South Island.

Damage to key infrastructure routes from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck New Zealand’s South Island, 60km south-west of Kaikōura on 14 November 2016, was unprecedented. It was critical that the rail and road connections that were damaged be rebuilt as a matter of urgency.

The North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery Alliance (NCTIR), comprising key stakeholders, New Zealand Transport Agency, KiwiRail, and four of New Zealand’s largest contractors was formed.

Aurecon led the overall design services in both the roading design programme and rail recovery programme, with key transport routes re-opening by December 2017. The rapid reconnection of communities was an outstanding achievement of collaboration and engineering excellence.
