Flood-tolerant tree species can withstand flooding, recover, and resume normal growth. Similarly, Brisbane’s new ferry terminals include unique flood resilient design features that facilitate a return to operation shortly after significant flood events.

These features include:

  • An upstream fender which absorbs the energy of and deflects heavy objects away to prevent damage to the terminal
  • A boat-hull shape inspired pontoon that minimises drag force and avoids negative lift on the leading edge
  • A gangway that uses buoyancy to automatically detach from the shore, swinging behind the broad downstream end of the pontoon and out of the way of debris while simultaneously the pontoon’s downstream mooring point changes function to provide lateral restraint to the pontoon
