From small beginnings in classrooms across Australia and New Zealand, to designing tomorrow’s greatest pieces of infrastructure, the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition offers secondary school students ‘real-world’ experience of what they can look forward to as future engineering students and professionals.
Aurecon believes that the engineering, science and technology industries must work together and lead efforts to make STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths subjects) more accessible and appealing to young students. The Aurecon Bridge Building Competition encourages students to unlock their potential by engaging with STEM early.
The competition is open to Years 8 and 9 students in Australia, and Years 9 and 10 students in New Zealand across seven locations.

The Aurecon Perth and Sydney offices have partnered with Engineering Aid Australia to support the facilitation of Indigenous Engineering Summer Schools. The Summer Schools, run by Curtin University in Perth and Sydney University, engage indigenous Australian high school students in engineering as a potential career.
The programme supports commitments in Aurecon Australia’s Reconciliation Action Plan and allows us to network and connect with young Indigenous people and encourage a career in engineering. We also get to showcase our digital and innovation initiatives during the networking sessions. For example, in Sydney we used the Virtual Reality sets to give the students a tour of the Barangaroo reserve.
Aurecon is committed to increasing opportunities for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples and this is one very direct way for us to do that. It is great to talk to year 10 students about what engineering is all about and to encourage them to enter our industry. It gives the students insight into the possible career path they could have within the industry. For Aurecon, it supports our path to diversity of thought and representing the communities in which we operate.

Aurecon continues a corporate partnership with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a not-for-profit organisation that connects, educates and empowers people through humanitarian engineering. Engineers without borders provides opportunities for corporate partners to contribute skills and expertise to poverty alleviation projects and community development, and to participate in initiatives that lead sector-wide change and innovation.
Aurecon staff are also involved in mentoring the next generation of engineers and non-engineers by participating in the EWB Challenge, Schools Outreach programme, fundraising activities, and knowledge-sharing events through the Engineers without borders-Aurecon partnership.
