– High Commendation: Engineering Creativity

In Te Reo Maori, Tirohanga Whānui means ‘Panoramic View’, which reflects the location of the Tirohanga Whānui Bridge at the top of Spencer Ridge in Auckland, New Zealand.

Seeing an opportunity to increase its functionality by including a walking and cycling connection, NZ Transport Agency appointed Aurecon for the engineering design.

Sharing a mutual love of bridge architecture, Aurecon collaborated closely with Jeff Wells, a well-known bridge architect. Guidance from local Maori artist Graham Tipene, together with open dialogue and thought-sharing, fostered the creative spirit that delivered a striking bridge echoing the richness of Maori culture.

This project proved that by creating a design-led solution, beauty and function can work together to leave a legacy for the local community who will benefit from the new Bridge for decades to come.
