By pushing the boundaries of existing technology and using drones – Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – Aurecon has revolutionised rock-mapping for the construction industry.

After the major earthquakes that struck Christchurch, New Zealand in 2011, Aurecon was involved in a wide variety of remediation projects, a major one being the damaged cliff and landslide at Deans Head. The project team’s innovative approach and commitment to digital solutions changed the way the project was tackled.

The team engineered unique, cutting-edge smart technology combining laser scanning of the 80-metre-high cliff with photogrammetry and drones. The mapping data was transformed into highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) models using sophisticated software. This approach completely negated the safety risks involved in manually assessing the unstable cliff face and landslide.
