Aurecon’s creative response to the challenge of constructing the new Adelaide Convention Centre Plenary Building on top of the existing car park and structure over the railway was to reuse the existing substructure.
The team interrogated existing geotechnical records, increased the capacity of the piles and manipulated the structural load paths so they could push the new building through the existing structures and build the new facility on top of the existing without putting a single new pile in the ground.
Aurecon’s design re-lifed the existing carpark and plaza structure to support a new building that was far larger, taller and heavier than the original intent. The new East building is an outstanding example of a world-class conference centre.
