What Engineering = Humanity means to me:
The 2019 theme of the Aurecon Industry Awards brochure – Engineering=Humanity – needs to be explained by initially defining terms, because while engineering is a single concept, humanity has two separate meanings. Engineering is an art which involves changing the natural world. Humanity means either the sum total of the human beings on the planet, or it means a philosophy relating to kindness and forgiveness.
Engineering has enabled humanity to have a significant impact on the natural world, far more than the impact that the sheer number of human beings would have. Engineering, like human beings, can be good or bad, wantonly destructive or misguided, or thoughtful, or advantageous. By applying the philosophy of humanity in our art of engineering, we can use our creativity to improve our world, retaining its natural values while making it a better place for people. Thus, the theme is a sandwich – using humanity to guide our art, we create a better world for humanity.
