Wynyard Station is one of the busiest in Sydney’s rail network. During summer, the station platforms are notorious for uncomfortable heat and humidity.

With control of the ambient conditions impossible, a localised cooling system projecting cooler air directly onto passengers was the best means to provide heat relief; a method tried in numerous locations worldwide with limited success.

Aurecon worked with the Novo Rail partners to establish a simulated environment in the station building, aided by virtual reality goggles to recreate a virtual Wynyard Station platform. This kind of simulation was a first of its kind and optimised high-quality and constructive feedback.

To ensure minimal disruptions and effectively communicate the project’s plans and benefits, the communication and engagement team created a bespoke approach using both traditional and digital communications to reach the many groups affected.
