The aviation infrastructure challenges of the Bendigo Airport Upgrade project were approached without any preconceived solutions, with only the fundamental requirements of safety, compliance and maintaining airport operations governing the solutions. Through diversity of thought and the expertise within the aviation team, the team provided innovative solutions that turned the City of Greater Bendigo’s strategic goal of a new runway with greater capability into a reality.
The longitudinal slope of the runway, whilst maintaining compliance, followed the natural shape of the existing terrain to optimise earthwork quantities and provide an effective drainage system cognisant of the surrounding environment. The land swathing black runway surface has similar characteristics to an ant colony as it transports itself in the most efficient algorithm across the earth.
