Aurecon’s creative response to the challenge of constructing the new Adelaide Convention Centre Plenary Building on top of the existing car park and structure over the railway was to reuse the existing substructure.
The team interrogated existing geotechnical records, increased the capacity of the piles and manipulated the structural load paths so they could push the new building through the existing structures and build the new facility on top of the existing without having to put a single new pile in the ground.
Just as large birds such as raptors and herons reuse their nest sites, Aurecon’s design re-lifed the existing carpark and plaza structure to support a new building that was far larger, far taller and far heavier than the original intent.
