Aurecon Industry Awards 2018

Pierre van der Spuy

Strongest Aurecon Attribute: Inquisitive

South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Awards

– Young Engineer of the Year

Since I was a kid, I’ve always been interested in how things work, whether it’s a car’s brakes or mathematics. A strong urge to learn something new every day has always been a part of my life. Currently, I'm busy with a PhD in structural engineering which requires a strong sense of inquisitiveness and exploration to contribute something new to the field.

I believe my curiosity to learn has enabled me to learn fast, placing me in a position to be exposed to some really large projects in a short career. To win the Young Engineer of the Year award it is essential to have a mega project or two on your CV. Two major projects I have worked on are the Chota Motala interchange in South Africa and St Peters Interchange in Sydney, as part of the WestConnex project.

Receiving the award was a defining moment in my career. Being a good student is great, but you need to be able to translate good marks into industry achievement. This award is recognition for achievement in industry and wouldn’t have been possible without my seniors at Aurecon and the Company’s commitment to develop talented young engineers.
