Vaal River Eastern Sub system Augmentation Project (VRESAP), South Africa

The VRESAP is an emergency water transfer scheme to abstract water from the Vaal Dam and pump it to the Knoppiesfontein division (South Africa) structure over a distance of 115 kilometres. Aurecon was appointed to provide design, tender and contract administration services, as well as supervise construction of all the civil engineering components.

The project has a design capacity of 5.4 cubic metres per second and consists of abstraction works in the Vaal Dam, a low lift pump station and a high lift pump station. The low lift pump station has four duty and two standby 700 kilowatt pumps, transferring flow through a total head of 29 metres to a balancing dam and desilting works upstream of the high lift pump station. The high lift pump station is equipped with one standby and three duty pumps containing two pumps per set.

The project also entails a single 1.9 metre diameter rising main covering a distance of 115 kilometres.
