Reconciliation strategies for large bulk water supply systems in the Algoa Region, South Africa

Aurecon was lead consultant in the study, developing detailed intervention implementation programmes and identifying medium to long term interventions.

A key feature of the strategy was to identify and develop innovative interventions that can increase the yield of already limited local water resources to meet future need. These proposed interventions include water conservation and water demand management (WC/WDM) measures, construction of new dams, development of groundwater schemes, reuse of treated wastewater and desalination options. Other potential interventions were the purchase of irrigation allocations, water trading, improved utilisation of existing infrastructure and the transfer of additional water from the Orange River System.

A Reconciliation Planning Support Tool was configured to model different future water requirement scenarios to predict the timing of the various interventions.
