Mauritius Metro Express Project, Mauritius

Aurecon undertakes project management and transaction advisory role for developing the Mauritius light rail project

The Government of the Republic of Mauritius has awarded the Design and Construction of the Mauritius Metro Express Project. The 26-kilometre-long light rail system will comprise nineteen stations including six interchanges.

The light rail is a priority transport infrastructure project that will deliver major and much-needed travel improvements to communities in the Republic of Mauritius, as well as long-term transport, economic and community benefits to the nation.

The Metro Express will enhance travel between Curepipe and Port Louis, linking major town centres to the Mauritian capital city. The corridor will serve the fastest-growing areas in the country, contributing to the country’s future economic development. The first light rail system to be undertaken in Mauritius, the Project is one of the Government’s key developmental goal to becoming an inclusive, high-income economy by 2030.

Aurecon undertook the role of Transaction Management and Advisor, as part of a Singapore-Mauritius Government collaboration, for the project’s procurement following from the successful completion of project planning, transportation modelling, business case, implementation planning, and value management of the design.

A rapidly-growing economy, increasingly unsustainable car ownership, and limited travel options in terms of public transportation services are causing considerable road congestion during peak traffic periods in and around Port Louis, Mauritius.

To overcome these challenges, we developed a solution that involved a world-class light rail transit project to serve commuters travelling between Curepipe and Port Louis.

The Metro Express will be one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken in Mauritius to date. The commercial interest in the project and the opportunities it presents will be significant for this emerging country, with associated property development and commercial opportunities worth hundreds of millions of dollars as a direct benefit of the project’s implementation. In addition, indirect opportunities will include increased commercial and residential property values in adjacent areas.

Providing a meaningful and well-planned public transport alternative for commuters is seen by the Government of Mauritius as vital in ensuring that all elements are in place to support and sustain an ambitious developmental and economic growth strategy.

Aurecon is very proud to be a part of this project, as it is in line with our strategy to design better futures and make a real difference in the communities in which we work.
