Reducing vehicle and pedestrian traffic conflict with a an elevated traffic circle with a pedestrian plaza underneath
Aurecon was appointed by the City of Cape Town for the design and construction supervision of the Granger Bay Boulevard and Green Point Traffic Circle which now provide effective access for vehicles and pedestrians to the Green Point Stadium and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic conflict was reduced via an innovative solution encompassing an elevated traffic circle with a pedestrian plaza underneath.
The associated roadworks, which although only 1.2 km in length, included three traffic circles, two new permanent signalised intersections, one temporary signalised intersection, alterations to two existing signal installations, and the construction of two Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations.
Construction requirements included archaeological monitoring of all excavations, due to the historical nature of the site, as well as recycling and reuse of all the existing road pavement and excavated materials. The works had to be carried out in a manner which ensured that all existing traffic flows were unhindered.
The project, which formed part of the Department of Transport’s 2010 transport action plan, significantly contributes to the aesthetic appeal and operational success of the Green Point Stadium and its surrounding areas.
This successful project received an award of commendation in the category of projects valued between R50 million and R250 million, at the Consulting Engineers South Africa Aon Engineering Excellence Awards. It also received an award for technical excellence at the South African Institute of Civil Engineering Project Awards.
