Square Kilometre Array (SKA) MeerKAT Processor Building, South Africa

Aurecon managing project to deliver the largest radio telescope in the southern hemisphere

As of 2015, Aurecon is fulfilling the role of project manager and design engineer for the 64-dish MeerKAT telescope (originally called the Karoo Array Telescope) under construction in the Northern Cape of South Africa.

This includes delivering a number of separate work packages, including civil and electrical infrastructure, all structural and building works, 64 antennae foundations, the Building Management System, the Local Area Network, Rotary UPS system and the Radio Frequency Interference shielding, as well as construction management, architecture and handover to acceptance.

Our team's core focus is infrastructure consulting, which includes the buildings, roads, foundations for the sensitive telescopes, an airstrip for access, as well as the provision of power and overall project management which surround such a project.

The telescope is due for completion in 2024, and will be the largest radio telescope in the southern hemisphere.
