The new state-of-the-art Jaguar Land Rover Polokwane dealership in the Limpopo Province of South Africa was officially opened in September 2017. The vehicle brand has been in the city for 12 years, but was looking to upgrade to a new location and revamp their facilities. The new dealership is set to become the benchmark for all Jaguar Land Rover retailers in South Africa.
Aurecon was appointed by the MGM Motors Group for civil, structural and fire engineering services of the 5 000-square-metre building located on the 20-hectare site of the new Baobab Gardens Development in Polokwane. The client plans to add other car dealerships adjacent to the new building in the future. The Jaguar Land Rover motor dealership includes a drive-in service centre, as well as showrooms for new and pre-owned vehicles.
Construction on site started in mid June 2016. One of the challenges that the project team encountered was the slope of the site. The new location is surrounded by three roads and the client wanted to ensure that the entire dealership was completely level and accessible from all three roads. A level surface was specified so that vehicles on display could be seen from all access roads, and by obviating steps the building would be wheelchair friendly.
However, to ensure a completely level site, an additional metre of soil had to be excavated and removed from the site. This led to a three-metre difference between one of the roads and the site, which resulted in the building only having two entrances instead of the preferred three.
Modern finishes, energy-efficient lighting and a sleek look-and-feel are features of the new car dealership. The feedback to the client, architects on the project (Prism Architects), and Aurecon has been positive, with many people saying that it is one of the best-looking motor dealerships in the country.
