A landmark 10 000 m2 development offering majestic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain
“Seamless and efficient collaboration between stakeholders, the ability to come up with solutions to sticky structural problems, and a commitment to excellence helped us deliver a gem of a project in the growing suburb of Century City,” Jaco de Villiers, Aurecon Technical Director.
The 10 000 m2 Axis development in Cape Town, developed by Rabie Property Group, features 85 luxury residential apartments and penthouses positioned throughout 10 storeys, a small-scale commercial and retail space at ground level, and two basement storeys. Aurecon was appointed for the structural and civil engineering work on the development, which was completed in November 2018.
The landmark development is located on a prominent corner in Century City, Cape Town, and offers building occupants majestic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain. Even from the innermost crevices of the building, views of Robben Island, Tygerberg Hills and Intaka Island can be seen thanks to the large gestural cuts and gashes that the architects, DHK, incorporated in the impressive design of the development.
One of the challenges that Aurecon’s design team had to overcome was marrying the monolithic geometry of the residential block to the parking structure below the building. To achieve this, the team conceived an innovative concept of introducing a series of transfer walls between the first and second residential floors. The walls that were developed transfer sets of three residential columns to two columns within the parking structure below, which enabled the residential floor slabs to span shorter distances, resulting in thinner, more optimally designed slabs.
The team also spent a considerable amount of time designing, detailing, coordinating and refining the steel structure fire escape stairs that service the top two storeys. While the stairs were borne from necessity, the graceful design that evolved makes them an elegant feature of the building.
In 2019, the project won the Bronze Design Award in the 2018-2019 Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award Category at the A’Design Award & Competition. It was also shortlisted in the SAPOA Property Development Awards for Innovative Excellence in the Residential category.
“It is very rewarding to work with architects and clients who push the boundaries, commit to excellence, and refuse to compromise on their vision. Aurecon is proud to be involved in this landmark project and I am proud of the structural solutions we were able to deliver,” says Jaco de Villiers.
