TrackStar Environment Management, Queensland, Australia
TrackStar Alliance was formed in 2006 to deliver a programme of complex rail infrastructure projects across multiple South-East and Central Queensland locations
The environmental management component of the programme involved managing environmental aspects for these multiple rail projects as part of the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan (SEQIPRAIL), with different local environments, conditions and stakeholders for each project. As part of the Alliance, Aurecon team members, in co-operation with the other Alliance partners, developed an Alliance specific Environmental Management System (EMS) to achieve consistency across multiple project sites and meet the environmental requirements of internal and external stakeholders.
TrackStar’s EMS was a major part of the overall Alliance management framework and contained environmental management measures and strategies from the planning and design phases of the projects through to the construction and operational handover/completion phases.
An integral and innovative part of the EMS was “Environment In Design” (EID) which increased the emphasis placed on the planning aspects of the projects, including environmental conservation and sustainability in society.
The increased awareness generated through EID challenges traditional civil engineering design mindsets and has the potential to provide better value outcomes for all infrastructure projects, the environment and communities in the future.
The system and plans required complete transparency and as a part of the process, were audited by multiple parties. Frequent, effective and meaningful communication was an essential part of the communications challenge and was achieved through proactive engagement with the client, stakeholders and relevant statutory and government departments.
Environmental management and sustainability were key outcomes for the project, with TrackStar rated consistently highly on these by internal and external stakeholders and our client.
TrackStar Alliance achieved finalist status in the Sustainability in the Built Environment Category of the 2009 Queensland Government Sustainable Industries Awards.
