Erongo Power Station Environmental Socio-Economic Impact Assessment, Namibia

The proposed Erongo power station is set to contribute to the base load supply and assist in stabilising the grid under load and supply fluctuations. In terms of the Environmental Assessment Policy of 1994, the construction of power generation facilities with an output of 1 MW or more requires authorisation from the Directorate of Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

For this reason, Aurecon was appointed by NamPower to undertake an Environmental Socio-Economic Impact Assessment (ESEIA) in terms of the Environmental Management Act No 7 of 2007 and the Environmental Assessment Policy of 1994.

This ESEIA aimed to assess the impact of a 150/300/800 MW coal-fired power station with an associated coal stockyard, an ash disposal facility and transport systems to deliver coal.

The Erongo Power Station ESEIA was completed and approved in 2012.
