“What counts in life is not the fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” - Nelson Mandela
What is Mandela Day?
Mandela Day serves to remind each of us to reflect on whether we are living up to Madiba’s remarkable legacy: The values of compassion, forgiveness, decency, love and respect for all people. At Aurecon, we are committed to helping improve the quality of life in the communities among which we live and work, and our offices globally organised special events to commemorate the day.
The start of Mandela Day
Launched on 18 July 2009 in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday, through a unanimous decision of the United Nations General Assembly, Nelson Mandela International Day, usually referred to as Mandela Day, is a global call to action founded on the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world – the ability to make an impact. Every July, this is reinforced by Nelson Mandela’s inspirational call for all of us to contribute to addressing the world’s social injustices by devoting 67 minutes of our time to bettering the lives of those less fortunate.
