Mandela Day is an ideal opportunity for us all to make a contribution towards nation-building, however small, that will enable us to realise Mandela’s vision of a truly free and democratic country for all.
One of the many causes vigorously championed by Madiba was the basic right for all South Africans to have access to clean water. In a significant new initiative, the Tshwane office hosted the launch of the Adopt-a-River campaign on Mandela Day. It is a community-based scheme aimed at empowering and motivating people to take responsibility for the health and quality of their community’s water resources by providing them with simple tools to monitor their local rivers.
At the launch, the Water Research Commission formally adopted the Moreletaspruit catchment in partnership with the Adopt Moreletaspruit Forum. This important water resource protection event was witnessed by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Department of Environmental Affairs, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, academic institutions, businesses and the Friends of the rivers flowing through Tshwane.
