19 March 2019 – Professionals from various organisations gathered at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on the evening of 14 March 2019 for the Sanlam-sponsored South African Professional Services Awards. Dr Eduard Vorster, Aurecon Client Director, Resources, was announced as the Professional of the Year (Engineering) at the event.

“I am truly honoured to have been presented with the Engineering Professional of the Year award, especially considering the world-class nominees at this year’s event. My thanks go to my team and all my colleagues at Aurecon, as well as our future-focused clients who have given us the opportunity to create innovative solutions for solving their problems and growing their businesses,” says Vorster.

Joining Aurecon in 2006, Vorster restructured its South African geotechnical group, which continues to push boundaries in reducing geotechnical and hydrogeological risks on projects. Over the past few years, he has double-hatted as both the Unit Leader of Aurecon’s Resources and Mining Team as well as the Client Director of Resources for Africa. As part of Aurecon’s revitalised client programme, Vorster has been focusing on his role as Client Director for Africa from 1 July 2018.

Vorster led the Aurecon foundation design team that is supporting world-renowned architect and engineer, Santiago Calatrava, on the Dubai Creek Tower in Dubai, as well as cutting-edge stadia in Doha, Qatar, among other noteworthy projects. Vorster has published numerous papers and articles, is a two-time recipient of the SAICE Geotechnical Division’s JE Jennings Award (2006, 2010), and in 2014 was the South African Institute of Consulting Engineers’ Engineer of the Year. In 2007, he won the prestigious Prix de Mécanique des Sols Jacques Verdeyen, awarded on a 4-year rotation for outstanding research in Belgium. Vorster has a number of formal mentorship relationships within Aurecon and he also mentors engineers on a project basis.

Ferdi Nell, Aurecon Managing Director ‒ Africa, comments: “Besides significantly growing Aurecon’s Resources portfolio, Eduard has been the driving force behind a number of digitisation projects in the mining sector that are not only making mines in Africa safer, but also more efficient, sustainable, and profitable for clients. On behalf of everyone at Aurecon, I would like to congratulate Dr Vorster for being recognised with this prestigious award.”

Aurecon was also nominated for Engineering Firm of the Year at this year’s event.
