Aurecon’s leadership in risk advisory once again recognised

Aurecon was the Winner in the Professional Services category for Industry Specific Risk Initiatives

Aurecon was recognised in the IRMSA's annual awards

22 March 2017 - The Institute of Risk Management South Africa’s (IRMSA) annual awards once again recognised Aurecon’s leadership in the field. The company was named as the Winner in the ‘Professional Services’ category for ‘Industry Specific Risk Initiatives’, while Rudi Rautenbach picked up the Runner-Up award in the ‘Up and Coming Risk Manager of the Year’ category.

Simon van Wyk, Aurecon’s Risk Advisory Leader, said the company’s unique mix of expertise and experience really sets it apart. “Our ongoing success in risk advisory comes from our ability to offer something different,” he said. “We’ve got an ideal combination of technical knowledge and risk advisory experience. That means we can delve into the specifics at a more technical level and understand our clients’ worlds better than other advisory firms. At the same time, we’ve made our work easier for clients to visualise. The world is becoming more complex and so is our work but – crucially – we’re making it easier for our customers to understand the level of uncertainty their projects or organisation might face.”

Central to the category win for Professional Services was the Aurecon team’s work with a major international transmission utility. The client had moved from government operation to private operation and Aurecon’s risk advisory consultancy engaged with both executive and group level management to provide a platform for change management, empowering the client to meet new strategic and business goals.

Aurecon delivered further value to the client, by helping them understand the tools and techniques they could use to realistically determine the level of risk exposure within their asset portfolio, which includes plant, equipment and processes. Aurecon also used its expertise to ensure that changes made within the organisation would not adversely affect its requirements to meet industry best-practice standards. Other work included facilitating the identification of critical success factors to drive business imperatives.

“With our international utility client, our risk advisory work was really the enabler that allowed them to understand the elements of cultural change that would help meet their new business imperatives,” explained van Wyk. “We were able to look at their asset portfolio in depth and understand how that related to their forecasts for the business.”

Bright future

For Aurecon, its future eminence in risk advisory looks assured following a period of significant investment at the company, and increased globalisation of its activities. In particular, the company’s next generation of leaders is already coming through and includes Rudi Rautenbach, a Senior Risk Consultant, who was Runner-Up in the ‘Up and Coming Risk Manager of the Year’ category at the IRMSA event. On receiving his award, Rautenbach paid tribute to the support he has received from Aurecon in his career development.

“I want to thank Aurecon for being so involved in my development. I feel grateful to have this opportunity to be part of a team that’s constantly driving for leadership in this industry. To win this award is a big honour,” he said. “An investment in risk management is something that a lot of engineers should consider. The processes and tools you learn in risk management ultimately equip the practitioner to be future-ready, which is vital in our ever-changing and complex world. At Aurecon we use risk management as a design-led thinking approach and it delivers vital results for our clients. It’s an area of engineering that’s moving at a considerable pace and it really provides a perfect foundation to create future-fit engineers.”

Van Wyk agreed, and paid tribute to Rautenbach while also highlighting how a love of uncertainty is crucial to a successful career in risk management. “The great thing about Rudi is that he loves uncertainty in business – he’s fascinated by it,” he said. “Risk management is about dealing with uncertainty and 90% of people don’t like dealing with uncertainty. But we love it. It’s the coffee we drink in the morning. This is the fourth year in succession we’ve won at the IRMSA Awards and it’s a great motivator for the team. We want to build on our success, and with our ongoing investment in tools and technology, as well as a growing team, we’re confident we can do that.”
