Aurecon Cares stationery initiative

Benoni stationery drive

15 January 2016 – Aurecon Cares, recently identified the Sinethemba Hope House in Benoni, Gauteng province as a deserving beneficiary of stationery supplies to give the children in its care a great start for the school year.

Sinethemba (“We have hope”) is a non-profit organisation in Benoni that is run by Sharon and Grant McGill. They have taken on the responsibility to feed, clothe and educate abandoned children, in addition to equipping them with the social skills and values required to one day reconcile the children with their families, wherever possible. There are currently 26 children residing at Hope House who are receiving full time care from youth and social welfare services.

Elanie Smit, Project Manager at Aurecon’s Johannesburg Environmental Advisory unit together with other members of the Aurecon Cares team presented books and stationery to the children as part of the company’s school stationery initiative. In addition to spending time with the children, team members also showed the children how to cover their books to ensure that they have presentable stationery for school.

“Stationery might appear to be something small for the average person but to an underprivileged child who has an appetite for learning, it makes a significant difference. The appreciation was evident in the smiling happy faces of the children as they helped to unload the stationery,” commented Elanie.

Regarding the overall feeling of joy and happiness at Hope House, Elanie adds, “Each child is loved and treated as part of a real family regardless of their background. This is an inspiring story of hope in South Africa and one cannot help but feel the warmth and love in this house.”

The McGills have dedicated their lives to the creation and smooth running of Sinethemba. They are passionate about providing a safe and secure environment in which children can thrive. Corporate Social Responsibility is an important component of Aurecon's operations and Aurecon Cares is privileged to have been able to contribute towards this worthy cause.
