Seawater desalination a sustainable solution

Adelaide Desalination Project

09 March 2015 - Aurecon Technical Director Joe Blesing will be presenting a paper on the multiple award winning Adelaide Desalination Plant at the ASEAN Australian Engineering Congress in Singapore on 11-13 March 2015 titled "Seawater desalination - a sustainable solution to world water shortage".

Run by Engineers Australia Singapore Chapter, the congress will explore innovative technologies in sustainability development and renewable energy.

Joe will share the solutions delivered for the sustainable design and operation of SA Water’s Adelaide Desalination Plant.

“Through planning and research, innovative and efficient plant design and energy recovery systems, the plant achieves low energy consumption. During construction, there was also minimal impact on the local community and marine environment,” Joe said

"The project was started with initial investigations based on sustainability principles, and continued through design, construction and now operation and is an example of how such a project can achieve sustainability goals,” he said.

The plant’s energy supply is offset by 100% accredited renewable energy sourced from within South Australia.

Joe added that seawater desalination can provide a climate independent source of drinking water as stress on existing natural water supplies continues to increase with world population increasing disproportionately in urban centres and the impact of climate change.
