20 February 2015 - Aurecon is a firm believer in education as crucial to successful skills development. As such, the company took a decision in 2011 to partner with the Programme for Technological Careers (PROTEC) in a bid to increase opportunities for young learners to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology (SET).

This is being accomplished through effective PROTEC Learner Excellence Programmes that run in parallel to formal schooling and that offer advanced maths, science and English education to learners from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and the Free State.

The Aurecon-sponsored Learner Excellence Programme consists of 25 Saturday classes, ten vacation classes and five days of work experience per year for a total of 130 learners. The programme also involves regular parent meetings and tutor training.

Tuition for the Aurecon Learner Excellence Programme is being provided by PROTEC, an organisation that has successfully contributed to the education of over 30 000 high school learners since 1983. This national non-profit educational service provider asserts that since then, the matric pass rate of programme participants has been double that of their peers.

Aurecon’s role in this worthy out-of-school education and development initiative is to cover the cost of tuition fees, learning support material, travelling and catering for the learners.

“The programme has proven to be immensely rewarding, considering where we started. The latest round of results received from matric students involved in this programme since Grade 10 through our sponsorship yielded a 98% pass rate, with 70% passing with matric exemption. Aurecon couldn’t be more proud to be involved in such a worthy initiative,” says Tutu Malinga, the driving force behind Aurecon Cares, Aurecon’s Corporate Social Investment Programme.

“Several of these learners have expressed immense gratitude for this opportunity and show great interest in furthering their education in SET-careers,” she concludes.
