Aurecon was appointed to complete the detailed design and construction oversight of the Bus/Rail Interchange. This involves two new bus platforms and a terminal building with an elevated concourse that links to the existing Ōtāhuhu train station. The design includes a bus layover, drop off zone, cycle amenities, ticketing and retail facilities as well as enclosed working and waiting spaces to create a comfortable, exciting and seamless customer experience.
“Our ingrained knowledge of the public transport system and customer focus has enabled us to create a high quality, innovative, yet cost effective design that we are confident will exceed customer expectations. As the first interchange of its kind in Auckland, the Ōtāhuhu station sets a benchmark for the many new bus/rail interchanges to be rolled out across the city,” said Tim Wedmaier, Aurecon Project Leader.
Nick Seymour, Auckland Transport’s Public Transport Project Director adds “The success of this project will provide more than an efficient and effective bus/rail interchange. It will contribute to the transformation of Ōtāhuhu.”
Aurecon’s involvement in the project started in 2013 with a peer review of the earlier scheme design. Through value engineering, Aurecon developed an alternative design concept to effectively meet Auckland Transport’s objectives for the interchange in a short time-frame.
Reflecting on the value management process, Tim said “By working closely with Auckland Transport and keeping the customer front of mind, we were able to develop a design solution that resolved the client’s capital cost challenges without affecting the overall quality. This involved reducing and reorientating the internal floor space, which allowed us to retain luxuries around durability and functionality that are important to the customer.”

Better connections between bus and rail networks
Aurecon aligned with Jasmax Architects for this project to provide a strong track record in the design of stations and interchanges.
The $28m project is funded by the Government through the NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Council. The fully integrated bus and train station is expected to open in the second half of 2016.
