15 December 2015 - Aurecon Cares is involved in a diversity of upliftment projects that seek to improve the circumstances of people in need of assistance.
In a recent initiative, it assisted the Phukwe Centre, a non-profit organisation, in Polokwane, Limpopo, by providing them with household goods and equipment to help meet their daily operating needs.
Phukwe caters for mentally disabled children in the Seshego community. The Centre takes care of the children during the day while their parents are at work. Currently, 12 children are being fed and bathed on a daily basis, in addition to being transported to and from their homes. Phukwe is one of only two of its kind in the region and provides a much needed service to the community.
During December Mpho Chokwe, Project Assistant at Aurecon’s Polokwane office, together with other Aurecon staff visited the Centre and presented a wide-ranging donation that included a gas stove, gas cylinder, furniture, desktop computer and food hampers. While visiting, Mpho and the team were invited to participate in the daily activities of the Centre. They also enjoyed having lunch with staff members and the children, as well as erecting a Christmas tree complete with decorations for the holiday season.
“Organisations such as Phukwe Centre play an important role in providing a safe and secure environment for mentally disabled children. We are inspired by these upstanding members of the community who have taken the initiative to successfully run such a facility in spite of the limited resources available. As such, Aurecon is delighted to have donated much needed household items to this deserving Centre to ensure the smooth running of this its operations,” says Hannes Claassens, Aurecon’s Polokwane Office Manager.
The Phukwe Centre is in the process of finding a permanent location for its operations with the help of the local municipality. Aurecon Cares looks forward to seeing this valuable community service flourish and continue with the important work that it is doing. The company, through its various Corporate Social Investment initiatives, is committed to supporting such organisations that are dedicating their time, efforts and resources to improving the lives of the underprivileged and vulnerable in our communities.
