Aurecon’s use of innovative 3D design technology recognised

07 April 2015 - Aurecon has been recognised for outstanding achievement as a nominee in the 2014 Bentley Be Inspired awards for its use of innovative 3D design technology on the ZAR40 million Matthew 132/11kV substation project in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Umgeni Water, a state-owned entity and the largest supplier of bulk potable water in KwaZulu-Natal, required a substation to provide power for a water purification plant supplying water to the Mandini area.

“We completed the design within a much shorter timeframe than usual, through the use of innovative 3D design technology that include comprehensive material lists and integrated design parameters embeded in the software,” Aurecon Project Manager Barry Grib said.

“This 3D design technology also enhances the safety, quality and accuracy of the design of substations.”

“By integrating civil and electrical design we were able to develop a highly detailed model with a high level of final detail and visual rendering,” Grib said.

Aurecon presented the interactive 3D model to Umgeni Water on a tablet and on an interactive 3D PDF model and was approved before we printed the final design drawings for construction. These construction drawings will in the near future become more software based for the client and the contractor.
