19 May 2014 - Aurecon is a firm believer in education as crucial to successful skills development. As such, the company took a decision in 2011 to partner with PROTEC (the Programme for Technological Careers) in a bid to increase opportunities for young learners to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology (SET).
“This is being accomplished through effective Learner Excellence Programmes that run in parallel to formal schooling and offer advanced maths, science and English education to Grade 10 learners from disadvantaged communities. The Aurecon Learner Excellence Programme consists of 25 Saturday classes, ten vacation classes and five days of work experience per year,” says Tutu Malinga, the driving force behind Aurecon Cares, Aurecon’s Corporate Social Investment Programme.
Tuition for the Aurecon Learner Excellence programme is being provided by PROTEC that has successfully contributed to the education of over 30 000 high school learners since 1983. This national, non-profit educational service provider asserts that since then, the matric pass rate of programme participants has been double that of their peers and the annual pass rate of PROTEC higher education students has consistently been above 90%.
Aurecon’s role in this worthy out-of-school education and development initiative is to cover the cost of tuition fees, learning support material, travelling and catering for the learners.
Initially, the partnership benefitted learners from five high schools in Mamelodi, Gauteng, as well as nine high schools in Pinetown, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The programme has since been extended to benefit learners from East London, Eastern Cape and Bloemfontein, Free State.
“The objectives of this programme are to improve selected learners’ performance in maths, science and English and to prepare and encourage them to embark on SET-based careers. It also aims to showcase a SET educational model that can be replicated in other communities.
“The programme has proven to be an immense success, with all the learners and their parents delighted with the results to date. Aurecon is proud to be involved with PROTEC in this worthy initiative,” concludes Malinga.
