22 August 2014 - Mike van Tonder has been elected President of the Intelligent Transport Society South Africa (ITSSA).

Mike was elected together with officials and members from a distinguished group of public and private sector organisations and companies including the eThekwini Transport Authority, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, JRA, Namela, Syntell, Techso and Transport for Cape Town, ascending to the Board of Directors at the ITSAA Annual General Meeting held on 12 August.

“I feel honoured to be elected to this position by the ITSSA membership and plan to leave a lasting legacy of my term in office as president of ITSSA. We as a board have in the past two years significantly improved our corporate governance in line with the latest legislation and we have identified several new challenges in this coming year to take the organisation to a new level representing our membership”, says Mike.

Based in Aurecon’s eThekwini office, the Aurecon technical director and intelligent transport systems service line leader will be responsible for overseeing the organisation’s vision to achieve a balanced and integrated transport system in sustainable cities with public transport as a mode of choice.

Aiming to keep its members up to date with the latest revolutionary advances in intelligent transport systems, the ITSSA strategic objective are driven by goals which include:

  • Delivering value-added services
  • Expanding ITSSAs delivery of value-added services to members;
  • Growing its membership base and network or partners and collaborators
  • Contributing to an enabling environment
  • Strengthening the strategic positioning and brand equity of ITS South Africa in the local and global market; and
  • Cultivating political and governmental championing of ITS.

With Aurecon positioned as a strong leader in South Africa’s burgeoning transport systems and infrastructure market, Mike is very enthusiastic and optimistic about what he will learn and contribute to in his new appointment.

“There are many cities around the world and in South Africa that are going “smart” to improve the lives of their citizens, and transport especially public transport is often the lead “smart” technology that is implemented first any smart city roll out programme.

ITSSA is the enabler of this smart transportation technology and therefore plays a vital role in social upliftment and economic empowerment in South Africa”, Mike concludes.
