20 June 2013 - Aurecon embraces the philosophy of giving back to communities in which we operate by encouraging our staff’s proactive involvement in Aurecon Cares, our corporate social investment programme.

When Tutu Mpungose, the driving force behind Aurecon Cares, received an appeal for support from the Lodewyk P. Spies Home in Eersterust, she immediately initiated a thorough needs analysis to assess how best Aurecon could address some of the home’s requests.

The Lodewyk P. Spies Home is a registered non-profit organisation which provides 24-hour care to roughly 100 residents. The home faces the challenge of ageing infrastructure and equipment, together with the basic needs of these residents, the majority of whom are from poor backgrounds.

Aurecon, acknowledging the magnitude of these needs, decided to support the centre by sponsoring paint, toiletries, personal accessories, mattresses, pillows and various nutritional products. A team of staff members also visited the home and assisted in the preparation and serving of a delicious lunch, thereby establishing rapport with the elderly and disabled residents.

Abraham Damons, Manager at the Lodewyk P. Spies Home, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the home’s residents, saying, “I want to convey our sincere thankfulness to Aurecon and your able team for your visit to our old age home.”

Reflecting on the afternoon spent at the home, an Aurecon employee who participated said, “The atmosphere at the home made me miss my grandmother. Seeing the joy on the faces of the elderly was truly a blessing. It was also a great opportunity to get to know my colleagues outside of the work environment, especially when working together towards a good cause such as this one!”

Mpungose concludes, “Aurecon is deeply committed to caring for our communities. I’m proud that this event was so well-supported in terms of employee participation. There is much knowledge and wisdom to be gained from senior citizens and this outreach is just one of the ways in which we been humbled and pleased to intervene in their lives for the better.”
