8 January 2013 - It was with deep sadness that Aurecon received the news of the passing of South Africa’s leading mountain bike rider and two-time Olympian Burry Stander on 3 January this year.

Aurecon is both a sponsor of and participant in the organisation which Stander so passionately involved himself in. Many of Aurecon’s staff have partnered closely with over the past two years, dedicating significant amounts of their personal time to ensuring the upliftment of the Kayamandi community through the sharing of skills in riding, training and racing with youths.

“Aurecon has seen firsthand the difference that personal involvement in our surrounding communities can make. Burry was a man who understood this principle, and who dedicated considerable effort to ensuring he used his talent to uplift others. He will be sorely missed by not only the cycling fraternity, but by the many lives he has changed,” comments Albert Geldenhuys, Managing Director of Aurecon South Africa.

Geldenhuys goes on to state that his loss is a tragic reminder of the need for all to remain vigilant at all times when it comes to road safety.

As a tribute to Stander, Aurecon’s competitive cycling team, Team Aurecon, will race the 2013 Summer Pro Classic Series wearing black arm bands.
