6 December 2013 - Along with every individual, South Africa and indeed the world, Aurecon mourns today the passing on of ‘Tata’ Madiba – the ‘father of our nation’ and very own ‘Khulu’ (great one) whose life’s mission it was to serve, uplift and strengthen those around him.
It would be fruitless to try and capture in words what Nelson Mandela accomplished during his life; or to list his many achievements. The same applies to the important positions he held; or the pivotal roles he fulfilled.
Even greater than these is what his life came to symbolise both before and after the formation of South Africa’s democracy. He believed in a better path, sought to travel that path, however fraught, and took an entire nation with him.
His life’s message was of what was possible through pushing through the gravest of odds. He famously quipped: "There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires."
Likewise, it was one of bravery and courage: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
May we measure our own actions against what you so powerfully demonstrated over and over again when you were still with us: “We must use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right.”
“Thank you Madiba,” utters the collective voice of a world forever changed by his message.
