29 May 2012 - Recent project wins in highlight growing demand for Aurecon’s advisory services.
Funded by a World Bank-managed multi-donor Trust Fund, the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) was founded with the goal of developing the Nile River Basin in a cooperative manner in order to ensure its resources are developed and shared and that its substantial socio-economic benefits promote regional peace and security. The NBI is currently in the process of establishing a Nile Basin Decision Support System (NB-DSS) to support water resources planning and investment decisions in the Nile Basin, especially those with cross-border or basin level ramifications. The NB-DSS will assist in the evaluation of alternative development paths and the identification of joint investment projects at sub-regional and regional level.
Key members of Aurecon’s team have extensive experience related to operational management, integrated water resource management and environmental flow assessments in shared river systems in Africa, including Limpopo, the Incomati-Maputo, Orange-Senqu, Okavango and Zambezi River Basins. For this project, Aurecon’s Cape Town Office will lead a multi-disciplinary team of experts from South Africa and Europe to provide the necessary experience, skills and expertise to successfully complete the project. Aurecon will be intricately involved with all aspects of the project including hydrological and system analyses, sophisticated scenario analysis, project management and capacity building. The project involves extensive interaction with all of the Nile riparian countries, including Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as with numerous international firms involved with parallel NBI studies.
The anticipated scale of future investments in water resource development projects in the Nile Basin is immense. Aurecon is very excited to support not only the NBI, but also the key decision makers in all of the riparian countries.
May 2012, Aurecon was appointed to the New South Wales (NSW) Treasury’s panel of pre-qualified advisers to assist the NSW Government with Public Private Partnerships (PPP) projects and their successful delivery. Aurecon’s appointment is for a period of three years, commencing in May 2012 and running until April 2015.
In New Zealand, the Schools PPP reached a critical milestone with financial close occurring in April 2012. The NZ Schools PPP is the first PPP to reach this stage in in the country and represents a significant development in the range of procurement options available in the country.
Aurecon are the transaction advisor providing advice to the New Zealand Ministry of Education on expression of interest and request for proposal processes, documentation and evaluation and negotiations during the preferred bidder stage. Aurecon was responsible for the development of the output specifications including both the technical and services requirements.

In May, Aurecon was appointed project manager for the US$80 million integrated retirement living development, Kawana Azure Blue in Brisbane, Queensland. One of the largest developments of its type underway, this win is on the back of our successful project management of Blue Care’s first Azure Blue Project at Redcliffe 26 kilometres outside of Brisbane city, and our award winning project management of a major hospital project in Queensland for parent organisation Uniting Care.
In April 2012, Aurecon was awarded the project management role on the US$175 million stage 1 Epworth Geelong Teaching Hospital in Victoria. Critical need for the client was securing a project management team that had a detailed understanding of all project issues relating to the delivery of the design and procurement. The client wanted a team that could ensure timely resolution of project issues, as well as concise and accurate reporting of programme, cost, risk, and health and safety.
