Aurecon joins Habitat for Humanity to save house in Christchurch

Helping Habitat for Humanity

22 March 2012 - Aurecon Structural Drafter, Danielle Lake, is driving a Habitat for Humanity initiative, organising Aurecon volunteers to repair a badly damaged home in Christchurch.
Habitat for Humanity is an international not-for-profit organisation which aims to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness by providing adequate housing for all. Danielle became involved 6 years ago while she was living in the USA.
“It’s always attracted a number of people because it has a unique approach to helping people in need”, said Danielle. “Before I came to New Zealand, the only projects I helped Habitat with were new build houses. This is the first time I have helped Habitat in a recovery area. Ever since the earthquake I have really wanted to help out people affected by the quake first-hand and use my technical skills in the process.”
The owners of the house have been living in a camper van in their garden since February and were thankful when the Aurecon volunteers arrived to start work on their house on Monday 20 February 2012. To show their gratitude they even provided a tasty morning and afternoon tea while Danielle and her crew worked hard on the house.
The eleven-strong team of volunteers successfully removed the stone veneer of the exterior of the house and then re-cladded it with ply and plastic for temporary weather measures on the first day.
The house has also been assessed by a structural engineer, Lee Howard, and Geotech personnel will be doing a ground assessment.
Danielle said, “The house has a long way to go, the foundation will need work and the house itself will need to be lifted and re-levelled. We all had fun getting outside and doing some physical work. Everyone is excited to do this again soon.”
Neil Barr, Manager - Australia & New Zealand Offices, said: “Well done to Danielle and her team who are living Aurecon’s values and making an exceptional contribution to their community.”
