“The awards acknowledge quality, excellence in design and innovation – all essential to the ever-evolving art of property development,” says Neil Gopal, Chief executive of SAPOA. “They epitomise the ability of South Africa’s property developers to find exciting solutions for clients’ requirements and stay at the forefront of global trends.”
This year, the overall winner in the green developments category was Nedbank Phase II, which is owned and developed by Nedbank Limited, and was designed by Grosskopff Lombart Huyberechts & Associates Architects. Aurecon fulfilled the role of mechanical engineer on the project.
The building – which achieved a certified four-star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) for both ‘design’ and ‘as built’ – is the first Green Star certified building in South Africa and has become a beacon of green building achievement in industry.
“The tangible benefits of going green are innumerable- and this is a facet of construction South African project owners have caught on to quickly,” comments Martin Smith, Aurecon’s national green building expert. He adds that Nedbank Phase II required an extraordinary amount of teamwork from the onset: “Participation of the whole design team was a crucial factor in ensuring a successful rating. It’s encouraging to learn that SAPOA has recognised these efforts.”
