With its massive Y-shaped columns and intricate concrete construction, The Central Terminal Building (CTB) not only forms the central link between the international and domestic terminals, but also connects with the multi-storey parking garage and new Gautrain high speed train link with the city. Its completion sets a new benchmark for design efficacy, functional flexibility and construction quality in that it is purposefully designed yet still manages to impress those who enter its doors with breathtakingly clean lines and robust surfaces.
Aurecon’s involvement in the innovative CTB project comprised the civil and structural engineering services, which included the implementation of a complex glass and aluminium system, as well as the wet services and mechanical (HVAC) engineering services.
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the- art dedicated light rail line between Johannesburg, Tshwane and OR Tambo International Airport, supporting a fast transit system capable of operating at 160 km/h. The project was a design and construct project which saw Aurecon work for the contractor as a design consultant, including the design of a 3 200 m and 264 m long segmental constructed viaducts, an incrementally launched bridge over the N1 highway, various drainage and service structures, retaining walls, street upgrades and the relocation of services. The client had very specific requirements and a large emphasis was placed on value engineering and continual optimisation of designs.
A truly ‘African’ creation, the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane is perhaps not the most audacious of stadia, but its wonder lies in the thinking that took place behind the scenes. Supported by giant ‘trunk' structures which accommodate vertical circulation ramps and service cores, its structure embodies the spirit of Africa with an unmistakably iconic baobab design. Its steel structure supports a massive roof plane gathered together at each corner in tree-like pleats to produce both rich cultural and historic significance.
Ultimately, our job was to save the client time, money and effort on the journey to meeting the very tight deadlines for stadium construction. The design features of the stadium simplified construction, ensuring completion in just two and a half years, whereas similar projects often take up to a year longer to complete. “It is immensely satisfying when design analysis and modeling come together to produce technical success,” said one member of Aurecon’s project team.
The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), an initiative of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), will inject approximately R29 billion into the South African economy and approximately R13 billion into the provisional geographic product. As part of this initiative, Aurecon was appointed to complete the design and contract administration on National Route 1 Section 21 between the Brakfontein and Flying Saucer Interchanges.
Roadworks include adding an additional lane and widening the existing lanes in both freeway directions, as well as upgrading three interchanges. The structural work comprises the widening of six existing bridges and the construction of four new bridges, one of which is a 240 m long incrementally launched bridge. This project will significantly reduce road traffic, enabling the smoother passage of visitors to the event.
